In Arthur Millers play The Crucible, the small twn f Salem is engulfed in hysteria due t the accusatins f children that many f the twnspeple partk in witchcraft. The bk des nt incrprate many characters; the plt f the stry evlves arund nly a few peple. In this essay I will discuss the tw f them, which I think play the crucial rle in the whle stry. ne f the accused in the witchcraft peple is Jhn Prctr, a strng, steadfast farmer. Prctr is the tragic her f the stry. Even thugh he tries t becme a her but ends up being ne f the accused. Prctr tries t remain a tragic her thrugh his effrts t save his wife frm being hung, trying t prve the children as frauds, and nt cnfessing t practicing witchcraft nce he was accused.


Prctr is very affected by his panic. The mst vivid example f his bsessin is when he tries t save his wife. He lves his wife Elizabeth s much that it is an impssible thught fr him t lse her. When the prsecutin breaks int his huse he is s infuriated by this assault n his huse that he rips the warrant and tells them t leave rather frcefully saying, Damn the Deputy Gvernr! ut f my huse!(77), demnstrating his intense lve fr his wife. Hwever, due t the unplanned strategy f the defense, Prctr, when he was trying t prve the girls were lying, gets himself t be accused in the criminal act. Thus Jhn Prctr fails in trying t rescue his wife frm the clutches f the false accusers, instead he falls pray t them. Prctr establishes that the children are lying in curt with respect t their accusatins f the twnspeple.


Prctr first learns f this thrugh his husehld servant, Mary Warren wh is ne f the accusers. Prctr deducts frm the events that Mary Warren and Abigail, the lead cnspiratr, are in cahts in trying t kill Prctrs wife by accusing her f witchcraft. They cme up with the idea f what is basically a vd dll that Mary Warren cnstructs in curt and gives t Elizabeth. Thrughut the stry Prctr tries t defend his wife, but the panic that takes the pssessin f him makes Prctr fail. The main reasn, hwever, is that Prctr had a lt t lse in his life. The secnd character, which shwed the signs f catching a panic attack, was Jhn Hale.
