It is tedious to tell again tales already plainly told1. In recent years the attention of the filmmakers turns to the Ancient Mythological heroes and historical persons. This interested arose not only in search of new themes, but also in attempt to acquaint the wide contemporary audience with the great heroes of the past. In the span of several years the audience was presented with great number of historical epic dramas that revive the great deeds of the past. The Movie Troy (2004) is one of the most notable recent cinematographic works, which was intended to bring to life one of the greatest epic stories of the Ancient Greek Literature, the legendary Trojan War, told in Myths of the Trojan Cycle. The filmmakers of Troy showed great respect to the original myth, but they denied the word for word approach of the scholars and presented the audience with the work, which arose many discussions.


The changes that were made in the plot made people look at the Trojan War at the different angle, and the famous Myths acquired new meaning. Sing, O goddess, the anger of Achilles son of Peleus. (Homer, The Iliad, Book I.) This beginning of The Iliad by Homer sets the mood of the whole poem and open the story that poeticize the great warriors of the past and their deeds. The Glory of the War and is one of the Major themes in The Iliad. The business of war brought fame and prizes to the warriors, and their victories were remembered in many generations. Achilles goes to war in pursuit of Eternal Glory even though he knows of his early death in battle. Hectors wife begged him to think of her and her son, but his answer was: I know nothing save to fight bravely in the forefront of the Trojan host (Homer, The Iliad, Book VI) The audience of Homer were men of Ancient Greece, and historically war business was the important aspect of their lives. 1Homer. Odyssey. Translated by Robert Fagles. (Penguin Books, 1999) The heroes of Myths served as examples of courage and skill, while cowardice equaled to disgrace.


The glory of heroes inspired people for their own war deeds. Homers Achilles, Odysseus, Hector and other heroes were archetypes of warriors and many generations followed their example of friendship, honor and courage. Famous historical figures desired to be compared to Achilles or Hector. In the beginning the poem Iliad and the beginning of the movie Troy both lay the symbols of war, they are opened with the statement of the major theme, but the attitude to the war is different in these works. The Movie Tory portrays negative attitude to war and death. Most major characters of the movie are reluctant to participate in battle. Achilles goes to the war on ly after he is convinced by Odysseus, and he protects his friend Patrocles from the reality of war till Patrocles escapes with Achilles armor. Hector says to his brother after he finds out that Helen of Tory escaped with him: Do you know what you've done? Do you know how many years our father worked for peace? How many brothers and cousins he lost on the battlefield? (Troy) Peace is the main aspiration of most characters in the movie, and this major difference between the poem The Iliad and the movie Troy reflect the cultural and historical difference between the contemporary generation and the times of Homer.


In the beginning of the twenty first century, after two World Wars and during many continuous conflicts people have different attitude to war. For contemporary people war is sad, dangerous and disgraceful thing, and the difference of attitude to war reflects the difference in views between generations. The filmmakers show the events of the Trojan War through the eyes of the contemporary people, who understand the horrors that war brings. The theme of mortality is very accentual in the poem Men come and go as leaves year by year upon the trees Those of autumn the wind sheds upon the ground, but when spring returns the forest buds forth with fresh vines. Even so is it with the generations of mankind, the new spring up as the old are passing away. (Homer, Iliad, Book VI) The theme of mortality is closely connected with the theme of Glory.


It is entirely seemly for a young man killed in battle to lie mangled by the bronze spear. (Homer, The Iliad Book XV) Homer amply describes the terrible deaths and the funerals in his poem. This idea is accented in the final line of his poem, mentioning the funeral of Hector. The Author leaves the readers with the feeling of loss and foreboding of new grief. Homer left unsaid destiny of the Troy and heroes among Trojan and Achaeans, but the reader knows that Most of them perish. In the movie Troy we see the death of Menelaus, Agamemnon and Achilles.


The kings of Sparta and Mycenae did not perish in Trojan War, but their symbolize evil in the movie, and their deaths symbolize the Ed of menace and the end of War.
